(Tubi Terrors is a somewhat reoccurring series about horror movies that can be streamed for free on Tubi.)
I pride myself in being a horror lover, but will always admit that I haven’t seen everything and that I don’t know everything. When I first downloaded Tubi and explored their horror section I was amazed at everything they had to offer. I scrolled for almost an hour trying to see everything they had before I realized I hadn’t made a dent. To motivate myself to watch more horror, and to write more so I could gain experience and have more work under my belt, I created “Tubi Terrors.” Usually it’s a brief recap and a quick review, but today I wanted to do something a little different and list a few of my favorites that can be streamed on Tubi right now.
These aren’t in any particular order. Sorry it’s a long list.
1. SLEEPAWAY CAMP

I had to include this movie because ever since I watched for the first time four years ago, I’ve loved it. Sleepaway Camp is about Angela Baker and her cousin Ricky, who go to Camp Arawak for the summer. While at camp, a series of murders begin to happen to those who bully or assault Angela. As much as I love Sleepaway Camp for its amazing one-liners and unique performances (cue a shot of Aunt Martha, and another shot of Mel screaming, ‘… not you, Meg…’), I am also aware of how problematic it is. Sleepaway Camp is a disturbing and inaccurate representation of trans women. 2 writers I follow and respect immensely address its problematic portrayal, and add how there’s a deeper level of gender identity and dysphoria that also needs to be discussed when the movie is brought up: those articles can be read here and here. It’s a movie that hasn’t aged well because of it’s subject matter, but is worth watching for its performances and the bigger unintentional message about gender.
2. HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES

If you know me you know I’m a sucker for Rob Zombie and his brutal, gore filled movies. I love The Devil’s Rejects and the controversial Halloween, but where my heart really lays is with House of 1000 Corpses. Centered around 2 couples who are traveling around in search of quirky roadside attractions for a book they’re writing, the group eventually finds Captain Spaulding and “The Museum of Monsters and Madmen.” While there they learn the legend of Dr. Satan, and ask Spaulding for more information. He tells them of an area where Dr. Satan was hung and the group makes their way to it. However while driving their car breaks down and they’re taken in by the kooky Firefly family, where all Hell breaks loose and the group becomes prisoners and are tortured. House of 1000 Corpses is a very brutal and graphic movie, but it’s fantastic. All of the characters feel real and terrifying and are iconic. Without this movie there would be no Captain Spaulding, Otis, or Baby: aka one of the baddest family trios in horror. Karen Black plays Mother Firefly and it’s truly one of my favorite performances of hers. When you’re finished watching this one make sure you watch the sequel The Devil’s Rejects, which is also available to stream on Tubi.
3. HATCHET

I love Adam Green and I love Victor Crowley, so Hatchet had to be included on this list. After a group of tourists on a haunted swamp tour get stranded, due to their boat sinking, they have to survive the wilderness as a popular ghost story ends up being real. This is a fantastic horror movie with some amazing kills; it actually has one of my favorites ever. With special effects done by the legend John Carl Buechler, campy dialogue and acting, cameos by Robert Englund and Tony Todd, Hatchet is worth checking out. While the two sequels afterwards aren’t on Tubi, the fourth installment (and probably my personal favorite) Victor Crowley is, so make sure you check it out too.
4. INTRUDER

Intruder is a great movie that has everything one could ask for: the Raimi brothers, solid kills, and a two minute cameo from Bruce Campbell. Plus, this is the third movie on my list of favorites that has one of my favorite kills. This underrated 80’s gem is about a group of supermarket employees working one of their last overnight shifts together who slowly get stalked and killed off by an unknown killer. Intruder is one of the horror movies I’ll put on when it’s been a sad day and I need a solid pick-me-up, or to watch while I fall asleep. It’s one of my comfort movies, and I love it so much. It’s an entertaining movie, and like I said it has some really fantastic kills in it. The only negative thing I really have to say about Intruder is that the ending always ticks me off, but it’s worth watching.
5. SUSPIRIA

“All of them witches,” is a line that everyone should have to hear, because this is a movie that everyone should have to watch. The original 1977 Suspiria directed by Argento is legendary, and iconic not only for its music but for its composition and beautiful, colorful scenes. Suzy is a student attending one of the best ballet schools in Germany, but, while attending, murders start to happen and she learns some dark secrets about them. When I say this movie is beautiful, I seriously mean that; the colors, the shots and Goblin’s music come together harmoniously.
6. KOLOBOS

When five strangers agree to live in a secluded mansion and have their lives be recorded 24/7, they end up having to survive booby traps and a mysterious killer. Released in the late 90’s Kolobos is a horror movie that I’m actually writing another blog post about, and hopefully will have it posted soon… It’s one of the first reality television horror movies out there and deserves a lot of love and recognition. When you watch Kolobos make sure you pay attention to the opening music, and see if you can pick up on the homages to Italian horror directors and their movies.
7. THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES

A while ago I watched The Poughkeepsie Tapes on Tubi for the first time and it was insane. I wrote a blog about it afterwards praising the movie since it’s one of the only found footage films to leave me speechless. The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a mockumentary horror movie about an unknown serial killer. Through FBI and personal interviews, archive news footage, and snuff films that killer took, we are given a disturbing peek into the mind of the killer and his tortured muse. If you do decide to watch this movie, please be prepared to see a lot of really graphic and possibly triggering things.
Originally this blog was going to be a lot longer with me listing off at least 15-20 movies. I decided against that but wanted to honorably mention some because they’re also my favorites currently on Tubi:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Ginger Snaps
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Hell House LLC.
Re-Animator
Black Christmas
Terrifier
It Follows
** The films listed above may, or may not still be available to stream on Tubi.
